iPhone 18 Pro's A20 Pro Chip: Conflicting Leaks Put Gains at Either 15% or 18%

The A20 Pro is the single biggest internal change coming to the iPhone 18 Pro this September — Apple's first chip built on TSMC's 2-nanometer process, a genuine node shrink rather than the usual incremental refinement. What's less settled is exactly how much faster it'll actually be, and two credible leak threads currently disagree.
A Real Node Shrink, Not Just a Name Change
The A19 Pro, in this year's iPhone 17 Pro, is built on TSMC's 3nm process. The A20 Pro moves to TSMC's N2 family — Apple's first iPhone chip on a genuinely smaller node, using Gate-All-Around (GAA) nanosheet transistors that wrap gate material around all four sides of the transistor channel rather than three, which typically improves both switching efficiency and leakage. Apple is also reportedly adopting Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) packaging for the first time, physically bringing RAM closer to the processor die — a change aimed less at peak clock speed and more at sustained performance and thermals under real workloads like gaming and on-device AI.
Two Numbers, Two Sources
Here's where the leaks genuinely diverge. Weibo-based leaker Fixed Focus Digital, citing supply-chain feedback, has posted that the A20 Pro will deliver roughly "18%± faster performance and 30%± reduced power consumption" compared to the A19 Pro — figures picked up by 9to5Mac, Cult of Mac, and AndroidHeadlines in mid-August. A separate report circulating a few weeks earlier put the same comparison at 15% faster, also paired with a 30% efficiency gain. Neither figure has a named, on-record source at Apple or TSMC — both trace back to supply-chain leakers rather than confirmed benchmarks.
One useful piece of context: TSMC itself has published official N2P performance targets of roughly 18% faster at the same power, or up to 36% lower power at the same speed, versus its N3E node — figures that make the higher 18% leak plausible as a ceiling rather than a typical real-world gain. Apple's actual implementation, once CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine gains are broken out individually at the September keynote, will likely land somewhere within that range rather than exactly matching either leaked number. Treat both the 15% and 18% figures as estimates from the same rough tier of reporting, not as a confirmed spec.
Projected Benchmark Range
Macworld's preview coverage estimates the A20 Pro could land around a 4,200 single-core and just over 10,000 multi-core score in Geekbench 6 — which, if accurate, would keep Apple's single-core lead over Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and MediaTek's Dimensity 9600, both expected later this year. These are pre-launch estimates, not measured results — nobody has benchmarked a real A20 Pro unit yet.
A Possible RAM Bump
Alongside the chip itself, multiple reports point to a RAM increase — one estimate suggests 12GB, up from the 8GB in the iPhone 17 Pro, while a separate report puts the ceiling as high as 16GB for on-device Apple Intelligence workloads. The two figures aren't necessarily in conflict — a 12GB baseline with select configurations reaching higher isn't unusual for how these rumours tend to resolve — but neither has been confirmed, and reporting hasn't settled on one number.
