Sony Confirms the Xperia 5 Line Is Permanently Discontinued

What started as a quiet skip has become a permanent decision. Sony first passed on releasing an Xperia 5 VI back in September 2024, citing a shift in "user needs" as Xperia 5 owners increasingly upgraded to the larger Xperia 1 series instead. After a second consecutive year with no successor and mounting speculation, Sony has now confirmed the Xperia 5 line is permanently discontinued — not delayed, not paused for a generation, but finished.

What the Xperia 5 Actually Offered

For years, the Xperia 5 series was one of the only remaining options for buyers who wanted flagship-tier internals — the same chipset and largely the same camera hardware as the Xperia 1 — in a genuinely compact body. The final model, the Xperia 5 V released in 2023, notably dropped its telephoto camera compared to earlier entries, a sign of the belt-tightening that preceded the series' full cancellation.

Why Sony Made the Call

Sony's own explanation points to changing purchase patterns rather than a single dramatic failure: representatives said Xperia 5 buyers were migrating to the larger Xperia 1 line anyway, undercutting the rationale for maintaining two closely related flagship tiers. That fits a broader industry pattern — true compact flagships have been vanishing across the board, with Apple's iPhone mini line ending after the iPhone 13 mini and few manufacturers stepping up to fill the gap with anything beyond mid-range hardware.

What's Left of Sony's Phone Lineup

Sony's smartphone range now consists of just two lines: the Xperia 1 flagship and the more affordable Xperia 10, both of which continue on their usual annual cadence. Neither offers the small-and-powerful combination the Xperia 5 carved out. If you want genuine flagship specs in a compact body today, the options outside Sony are thin too — this is a shrinking category industry-wide, not just a Sony story.
