iPhone 18 Pro's September Event Will Skip the Standard iPhone Entirely — Here's Why

Multiple supply-chain reports now agree that Apple's upcoming September keynote will feature only its three most expensive phones — the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, plus the company's first-ever foldable iPhone — with the standard iPhone 18 and a lower-cost iPhone 18e held back until spring 2027.

What's Actually Changing

MacRumors, 9to5Mac, and supply-chain outlet ithinkdiff have independently converged on the same shape: September 2026 becomes a premium-only event, with the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone as the only new phones on stage. A report citing Apple contract assembler Pegatron adds that the standard iPhone 18 and a refreshed iPhone 18e will follow around March 2027, with a second-generation iPhone Air possibly joining them in that window — though its exact timing is still contested, with some reports placing it in the fall lineup instead. If accurate, this means buyers who typically wait for the standard iPhone won't have a new one to buy in the traditional autumn window at all this year; the only new iPhones available until spring 2027 will carry Pro-tier pricing.

Two Reasons Behind the Split

The reporting points to two separate motivations rather than one. First, Apple wants to give its first foldable iPhone genuine room on stage rather than having it compete for attention against four other new phones in the same keynote — a foldable at a rumoured $2,000-plus starting price is a big enough story to justify a less crowded event. Second, and more strategically, spreading launches across spring and fall is described as a response to Chinese rivals — including several brands already covered in GSMTechTok's own device database — that routinely release flagship phones in the first half of the year, a period Apple has historically left uncontested. A spring iPhone 18 launch would give Apple a fresh product to talk about during a part of the calendar it currently cedes almost entirely to competitors.

Even the Delayed Phones' Specs Are Disputed

Reporting on what the spring 2027 iPhone 18 will actually offer is notably less settled than the September lineup. Analyst Jeff Pu expects the base iPhone 18 to jump to 12GB of RAM, up from 8GB on the iPhone 17. Ming-Chi Kuo, a separately-sourced and generally reliable analyst, instead forecasts both the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e shipping with just 9GB of RAM — a figure that would reportedly be too low to support the full range of Apple Intelligence features. Neither analyst has revised their position publicly as of this writing, so the two forecasts remain a genuine, unresolved disagreement rather than a case where one side has since backed down.

The Event Itself Still Isn't Officially Dated

As of publication, Apple has not sent press invitations or confirmed a keynote date. September 9 remains the most widely reported target, based on Apple's pattern of avoiding the day after Labor Day and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman pointing to that date specifically. Apple has told US retail staff the event will fall within the first half of September without naming an exact day, and the formal invitation is widely expected around August 26 — roughly two weeks ahead of the keynote, matching Apple's pattern for each of the last four years. Notably, this keynote is also expected to mark incoming CEO John Ternus's public debut in the role, following Apple's confirmed leadership transition on September 1.
